Sewall awarded US Marine Corps contract for GIS consulting services

(Old Town, Maine--19 February 2008)  The U.S. Marine Corps Intelligence Activity has contracted James W. Sewall Company to provide GIS consulting services in support of the development of geospatial intelligence applications. As an Independent Project Controller (IPC), Sewall is evaluating portable hardware and software systems for delivering mission-specific GIS mapping and imagery products to Marine Corps forces in the field. The project is part of the MCIA’s larger Geospatial Web and Dissemination Initiatives to provide select operational forces with spatially enabled intelligence through the implementation of the Geographically Linked Information Environment (GLIDE), the MCIA Geodatabase, and DGInet applications, including the recent Regional Expeditionary Intelligence Portable Resource (REIPR), a portable subset of GLIDE.

To support REIPR (pronounced “Reaper”), an ESRI-customized software solution, Sewall is testing GPS units, laser range finders, and ruggedized digital cameras for ease of use, durability, and performance, as well as the functionality of the software, providing analysis with recommendations to both ESRI and the MCIA. Sewall will also provide some systems integration services, including linking the ruggedized camera to other intelligence gathering equipment for real-time data collection and redeployment through GLIDE to other users.

Matt Benden, Program Manager at MCIA’s Geospatial Intelligence Division, says, “Thorough testing, meticulous documentation and taking the time to understand a user requirement from the very beginning often yield great results. Sewall is doing just that.”

Founded in 1880, Sewall provides comprehensive engineering, GIS, and forestry consulting solutions to government and industry. Sewall's consulting expertise is supported by 50 years' experience in geospatial data development, including aerial photography and photogrammetric mapping; 30 years' in GIS database and application development; and 10 years’ in digital orthophotography.
