ConnectME Authority sends out second cycle of broadband surveys to Maine residential and business consumers. Sewall to update assessment of Maine broadband needs in 2013

Since January 2010, the ConnectME Authority has been awarded nearly $5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding from the Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), to pursue  broadband mapping, planning, technical assistance and capacity building projects, creating the first comprehensive geographic inventory of high-speed internet services statewide for use in identifying unserved and underserved areas and in planning expansion and adoption of broadband throughout the state. The ultimate goal of this effort is to help bring high speed internet access to all households and businesses throughout the state.

Surveys requesting input from both Maine residents and businesses were mailed in January 2011. The second cycle of surveys, directed to the same recipients, will be mailed this month. The purpose of these surveys is to solicit input about broadband/internet access: identifying the drivers and barriers to greater adoption in their respective geographic regions. Random samples of residents and businesses have been chosen to receive the surveys. The ConnectME Authority encourages all who received the survey in 2011 to fill out the second cycle survey and mail it back in the business reply envelope that is provided. Recipients of the printed survey will have the option to participate in the survey online, if preferred. Data from this latest round of surveys will be compared with the previous survey cycle and will be included in the updated Needs Assessment report to be released in 2013.  Later this year, a first time survey targeting health care providers will be distributed.  The results of this survey will be combined with results from the residential and business surveys to yield even greater information regarding broadband needs statewide.
